“…According to the nonmagnetic J = 0 singlet (4f 6 ) of Sm 2+ , the XMCD signal comes from the Sm 3+ contribution at the surface with a shape similar to that observed in SmAl 2 [46] and Sm 0.974 Gd 0.02 Al 2 [47]. Several phenomena related to the multiplet structure of the intermediate state may occur which render FY XMCD different from the true XMCD spectrum at the M 4,5 edge of rare earths [41]. Thus, the main qualitative observation for the bulk is a reduced XMCD intensity, roughly 1/4, as compared to the XMCD on the surface, indicating a much smaller 4f contributed magnetization in the bulk SmB 6 .…”

“…A weighted sum of TEY-and FY-XAS (4 K) has been built and compared to the experimental spectra, shown in Figs. 1(b) Even after the self-absorption correction for the FY XAS, the valence of Sm still can be overestimated [41]. In order to extract the valence of the Sm in the bulk under pressure, experimental Sm L 2 edge XAS spectra are recorded and shown in Fig.…”

“…In 1994 it was shown that the FY detected spectrum of a nickelcyanide complex does not relate to the 2p x-ray absorption XAS spectrum due to the state dependent intensity fluctuations of the fluorescence decay channels 16 . The same mechanism is responsible for the difference between FY-XAS and XAS at the M 5 -edge of rare earth systems 17 . In contrast, most experimental studies involving experimental FY spectra do not seem affected by distortions from the XAS spectral shape, or at least they are not analyzed for the possibility as being distorted.…”

“…35,36 Although some work mentioned the possible distortion in 3d metals, our spectra for the dilute (0.14%) Ni II ion do not show a significant distortion effect. The ratio of L 3 to L 2 peak heights is about 4:1, which agrees well with previous TEY results (also 4:1) on high-spin Ni II compounds in the reports 26,27 and in our own measurements ( Figure 3).…”
