The air quality during the Summer 2016 Olympic Games in two Olympic zones, Maracanã (Tijuca) and Deodoro, was studied. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were collected and analyzed following method TO-15 (United States Environmental Protection Agency), during and in the days after the Games. The total VOC (C 4 -C 12 ) concentrations were 39.2-160.9 and 36.6-191.4 µg m -3 for Tijuca and Deodoro, respectively. These concentrations were lower than values previously obtained in Tijuca and other areas of the city. VOC speciation and benzene/ toluene ratios were also different as a consequence of the restrictions imposed on vehicular transit during the Olympic Games. Concentrations were discussed considering the reactivity and ozone forming potential of individual compounds. Criteria pollutants, determined by the Tijuca Automatic Monitoring Station, were also analyzed. The preventive policies were successful in decreasing the concentrations of CO and PM 10 , leading to a decrease in mean ozone levels. However, air quality indexes were not dramatically reduced, because of the increase in NO x emissions and isolated events of higher ozone levels.

The BTEX group (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene) are known for their potential toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects, especially in an indoor occupational environment, where these substances dissipate with greater difficulty. Thus, the present work evaluated the concentrations, mutagenicity and cytotoxicity of the BTEX group in the indoor air of workshops involving painting and varnishing. Samples were collected using air pumps from the outside of the open environment workshops and from the inside of each of the three workshops. The chemical analyses were carried out using gas chromatograph with mass spectrometry. The mutagenic and cytotoxicity potentials were determined using the Salmonella/microsome and WST/LDH assays, respectively. The concentrations of each constituent of the BTEX group were below the limits established by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and toluene presented the highest value. Moreover, these compounds did not induce mutagenic activity in the TA98 and TA100 Salmonella typhimurium strains either in the presence or in the absence of metabolization, and no cytotoxic effects were observed in the A549 human lung cells. These results may be related to the low BTEX values found in the occupational environment, as can be seen in some other studies. Nevertheless, at low concentrations, these compounds may cause toxicity by a pathway not investigated in this study or may have interacted with other non-monitored air constituents, reducing their toxicity. The present study sought to obtain more information and clarifications regarding occupational exposure to BTEX, contributing to the risk assessment of the workers exposed to these substances.

Brazil has a long history in the development of ethanol for use as a liquid fuel for vehicles. They have developed one of most efficient and economical systems for producing ethanol in the world. Brazil provides an example that many other countries would like to emulate. Using ethanol as a vehicle fuel has significant potential air quality impacts. This paper will review the available air quality and vehicle emissions data in Brazil, specifically focusing on vehicle related pollutants that may be impacted by the use of large quantities of ethanol in the fuel. The atmospheric concentrations of acetaldehyde (CH 3 CHO) and ethanol in Brazil are much higher than those in other areas of the world, while the concentrations of the single ring aromatic compounds and small carboxylic acids are more typical of observations elsewhere. Acetaldehyde and ethanol increase in vehicle emissions and nitrogen oxides (NO x) may increase when ethanol fuels are used. Both CH 3 CHO and NO x are very important contributors to photochemical air pollution and ozone (O 3) formation. There are very significant O 3 air quality problems in Brazil, most studied in the larger cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. These are issues that must be evaluated for other areas of the world that are considering the use of high ethanol content vehicle fuels.
