Experimental data on mechanical properties evaluation of medium carbon steel quenched in different waste media

Abstract: Several wastes can be instrumental in the improvement of the mechanical properties of medium carbon steel when quenched. The quenching media employed such as coconut water (CW), pap water (PW) and spent engine oil (SPE) have been largely considered as wastes. The data in this article are related to the research article titled “Mechanical Properties Improvement Evaluation of Medium Carbon Steels Quenched in Different Media” (Ikubanni et al., 2017) [1]. The article provides information on the mechanical properti… Show more

“…Since then, highly specialized and localized quench products have been in search [13]. Mineral oils have been established to have the best cooling capacity for engineering materials such as steel and aluminum alloy [14][15][16][17][18] but they are relatively expensive, toxic, non-renewable, and non-biodegradable [1]. Thus, they are subjected to everincreasing controls due to stringent environmental regulations regarding their use [18].…”

“…Based on the OES result, the base material was welded with HV 600 electrodes, resulting welded layer in the composition: 0.342 wt%C, 0.182 wt%Si, 0.608 wt%Mn, 2.09 wt%Cr, 0.139 wt%Cu, and Fe balance. The 0.342 wt%C in the steel is close to medium carbon steel [25].…”

“…Oil is a major quenchant (quenching medium), which consists of water, aqueous polymer solution, and various additives. Owing to the importance of quenching in the heat treatment process, several researchers had previously used different kinds of quenching media to improve the properties of steels (Adeleke et al, 2018;Ikubanni et al 2017Ikubanni et al , 2018Adekunle et al, 2013;Odusote et al, 2012;Ndaliman, 2006).…”
