Experimental Design Affects Social Behavior Outcomes in Adult Zebrafish Developmentally Exposed to Lead

Abstract: Lead (Pb(2+)) affects neuronal and endocrine systems that influence social interactions. By providing potential hiding locations, spatial heterogeneity may affect Pb(2+)-induced behavioral outcomes. Therefore, a test chamber was designed into which a refuge could be inserted. The refuge allowed test subjects to escape from the mirror image that stimulated agonistic interactions. Behaviors with a mirror were compared with baseline activity patterns without a mirror. Adult (12-month old) male and female zebrafis… Show more

“…Heavy metals are known to affect behavior, including impulsive aggression and anxiety [ 57 , 58 , 59 ]. In this study, to assess the effects of chronic ZnCl 2 exposure on social behavior, we performed two behavioral paradigms, the mirror-biting and predator avoidance tests, and observed that the mirror-biting time was significantly reduced by sub-chronic exposure to ZnCl 2 in adult animals ( Figure 6 B).…”

“…The heavy metals lead and arsenic were also tested, with lead exposure increasing aggression in a mirror test (Weber and Ghorai, 2013) and arsenic showing no effect on social behavior (Dipp et al, 2018).…”
