Experimental Evaluation of the Influence of Aggregate Strength on the Flexural Cracking Behavior of Epoxy Asphalt Mixtures

Abstract: The flexural cracking resistance of an asphalt concrete mixture used in a steel bridge deck pavement needs to be higher than that of one used in ordinary pavement. In this study, mechanical experimental tests were used to evaluate the influence of the aggregate strength on the flexural cracking behavior of epoxy asphalt concrete (EAC). The aggregate fracture area of beam cross sections was quantitatively analyzed by digital image processing, and crack propagation in the mixture was analyzed using fracture mech… Show more

“…High interlocking increases the tensile strength and the cracking resistance of the modified asphalt mixtures (Modarres and Hamedi, 2014;Aliha et al, 2015;Movilla-Quesada et al, 2019b). In summary, failure in asphalt mixtures is mainly initiated and propagated around the coarse aggregate of the mixtures (Xu et al, 2020;Radeef et al, 2021b). Thus, the presence of the plastic coat with modified asphalt can lead to a decrease in the rate of cracking propagated throughout.…”

“…Tis form of damage is yield damage. In this paper, we defne the area of the shaded part of the graph as the impact toughness, which is the work done when the load acts at its maximum [27,28]. According to formulas (4) and ( 5) can be seen, impact toughness can refect the ability of the material to resist fracture damage, combined with Origin software and MATLAB software can calculate the product of the shaded part in Figure 3.…”

“…Fracture toughness (K IC ) is one of the variables for analysing failure mechanisms; it is the material's resistance to crack propagation [18,20,21]. Various experimental procedures existed to estimate the K IC of asphalt mixtures as follows:…”
