In
this work, we propose the microwave-assisted hydrothermal activation
method to synthesize supercapacitor electrode materials from corn
straw under a small amount of the potassium catalyst (30 wt %), which
can meet the environmental protection and low-cost requirement. With
the extension of radiation time from 40 to 100 min, the pore structure
of hydrochar expands from the micropore to hierarchical pore, and
the microstructure evolves from an amorphous structure to graphene-like
sheets. Microwave-assisted hydrothermal activation can control the
synergistic development of hierarchical pore and graphene-like sheets
of hydrochar under the condition of using a lesser amount of the catalyst.
The as-obtained HTC-40/70/100 shows an excellent graphitization degree
and the developed hierarchical pores. By comparing the electrochemical
performance of the symmetrical capacitor devices composed of corn
straw hydrochar and pyrochar in organic electrolytes, we have found
that the hydrochar is suitable for organic system symmetric capacitance,
and the pore structure and graphitization degree are closely related
to the transmission of ions and electrons in the electrolyte. Therefore,
HTC-100 with a high specific surface area (1781 m
2
/g) and
highly ordered microstructure has the best electrochemical performance.
The type and fineness of a filler significantly affect the performance of an asphalt mixture. There is a lack of specific research on the effects of filler fineness and dust from aggregates on the properties of epoxy asphalt (EA) mixtures. The effects of aggregate dust and mineral powder on the properties of an EA mixture were evaluated. These filler were tested to determine their fineness, specific surface area and mineral composition. The effects of these fillers on the EA mastic sample and mixture were evaluated. The morphology of the EA mastic samples was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of the fillers on the Marshall stability, tensile strength and fatigue performance of the EA mixture were evaluated. The dust from the aggregates exhibited an even particle size distribution, and its average particle size was approximately 20% of that of the mineral powder. The SEM microanalysis showed that the EA mastic sample containing relatively fine dust formed a tight and dense interfacial bonding structure with the aggregate. The EA mixture sample containing filler composed of dust from aggregate had a significantly higher strength and longer fatigue life than that of the EA sample containing filler composed of mineral powder.
Recycled asphalt mixtures (RAM), which are prepared by blending reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), virgin bitumen and mineral additives, provide a variety of advantages, including resource recycling, reductions in costs, and reduced negative environmental impacts. However, multiple agencies have expressed concerns about the utilization ratio of RAP; thus, a comprehensive understanding of the blending degree of virgin and RAP binders in RAM would be significantly helpful for promoting the application of RAP. This study aims to quantitatively analyze the blending degree of virgin and RAP binders in RAM with high RAP contents. Carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) was utilized as a tracer to mark the virgin bitumen; in addition, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to develop the structural index of CTBN (ICTBN). By establishing the standard curve between ICTBN and the CTBN content, the blending degree of virgin and RAP binders at different locations within RAM can be determined quantitatively. The study results indicate that the RAP binder was completely blended with the virgin bitumen in the outer RAP layer. However, the blending degree decreased with an increase in the RAP depth, and the blending degree in the inner RAP layer was only approximately half that which was found in the case of complete blending.
The flexural cracking resistance of an asphalt concrete mixture used in a steel bridge deck pavement needs to be higher than that of one used in ordinary pavement. In this study, mechanical experimental tests were used to evaluate the influence of the aggregate strength on the flexural cracking behavior of epoxy asphalt concrete (EAC). The aggregate fracture area of beam cross sections was quantitatively analyzed by digital image processing, and crack propagation in the mixture was analyzed using fracture mechanics theory. The bending test results showed that the EAC containing high-strength aggregates exhibited the highest flexural cracking resistance among all of the aggregate mixtures under the same conditions. The use of high-strength aggregates led to a reduction in the aggregate fracture area, thereby improving the flexural cracking resistance of the mixture. The aggregate strength had a significant influence on the flexural cracking propagation behavior of the mixture. Fatigue test results at strain-controlled levels of 600–1200 με and 15 °C showed that the aggregate strength had no evident influence on the fatigue properties of the EAC. It is recommended that high-strength aggregates are used to increase the fracture resistance of aggregates and the flexural crack resistance of EACs.
