“…The infectivity of F. gigantica was found to be low in Wistar rats (Itagaki et al 1994). Rabbits, the rat-like hamster, Tscherskia triton , and sheep have also been used for studies of experimental fascioliasis (Terasaki et al 2003; McConville et al 2009).…”

Rabbits, the rat-like hamster, Tscherskia triton, and sheep have also been used for studies of experimental fascioliasis (Terasaki et al 2003 ;McConville et al 2009). In chemotherapeutic studies, groups of rats or sheep, which had been experimentally infected with F. hepatica for 3-5 weeks (juvenile infection) and 8-12 weeks (adult infection) or sheep harbouring a natural infection are treated with the investigational drugs and the numbers of flukes present in the livers and bile ducts are counted several weeks post treatment.…”

“…Allam (1992) reported that metacercariae of Fasciola obtained from field-infected L. natalensis snails were fed to mice, but no eggs or worms could be obtained. In contrast, F. gigantica infection in T. triton did not yield adult flukes; T. triton is considered to be an unsuitable host for F. gigantica (Terasaki et al 2003). The experimental infection in mice during the present study was performed by metacercariae obtained from field-infected snails (the prevalent Fasciola species is gigantica) but the infection failed, so the present work proved that mice are not susceptible to the Upper Egyptian strain of Fasciola species.…”

“…Valero and Mas-Coma (2000) have used Altiplanic sheep, cattle, pigs and donkeys as experimental models of F. hepatica. Terasaki et al 2003 used rat-like hamsters (T. triton), cotton rats and rabbits as experimental models for F. hepatica and the parthenogenetic Fasciola sp.…”
