Experimental investigation of impact of long rod eroding projectiles against rolled homogeneous armour

Abstract: Long rod eroding penetrators exhibit hydrodynamic behaviour upon impact against the target plates. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the factors affecting the penetration of tungsten alloy rods against rolled homogenous armour at ordnance velocities. Experiments were carried out for range of projectile length to diameter ratios to determine the penetration efficiency of the projectile, where the projectile penetration efficiency is the penetration depth per unit projectile length. Analytical… Show more

“…Kinetic energy ammunition is being used as a countermeasure against the development of protection systems, such as tanks or light armored vehicles. Kinetic energy ammunition is being developed in the form of wingstabilized armor-piercing (AP) ammunition using high slenderness ratio (L/D) penetrators to maximize penetration performance [1].…”

“…They proposed a quick design procedure using composite patch repairs for the most common damage cases using FE results. Zaki et al 31 investigated the factors affecting the penetration of tungsten alloy rods against rolled homogenous armor in ordnance velocities. They implemented the Alekseevski-Tate analytical model to predict the penetration depth across the lengthto-diameter range.…”
