Experimental metrology to obtain thermal phonon transmission coefficients at solid interfaces

Abstract: Interfaces play an essential role in phonon-mediated heat conduction in solids, impacting applications ranging from thermoelectric waste heat recovery to heat dissipation in electronics. From the microscopic perspective, interfacial phonon transport is described by transmission coefficients that link vibrational modes in the materials composing the interface. However, direct experimental determination of these coefficients is challenging because most experiments provide a mode-averaged interface conductance th… Show more

“…We further set e Al-Si ¼ e Al-O ¼ 100 meV such that the thermal conductance at the SijAl and Sija-SiO 2 jAl interfaces obtained from MD simulations is consistent with the experimental data. 37 The cutoff distance for all LJ interactions is 11 Å in the MD simulation.…”

“…Recent experimental work 37 on phonon transport across SijaSiO 2 jAl interfaces indicates that direct electron-phonon coupling has negligible effects on interfacial phonon transport. Hence, the direct electron-phonon coupling at the h-BNjAl and a-SiO 2 jAl interfaces is neglected in WP simulations.…”

“…Notable exceptions may be found where phonon reflection and internal reflection have been evidenced experimentally 4,5 , but these manifestations concern sub-Thz frequencies, a situation where continnum acoustics and thus Snell-Descartes laws should be at work. In contrast to phonon scattering, reflection and transmission coefficients for photon interfacial scattering are well described by Fresnel coefficients 6 . Even the involved problem of the intensity scattered by a rough interface has been adressed theoretically by Maradudin and coworkers 3 .…”
