Experimental modeling of the acute toxicity and cytogenotoxic fate of composite mixtures of chromate, copper and arsenate oxides associated with CCA preservative using Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822)

Abstract: Concurrent occurrence of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu) and arsenic (As) from chromated copper arsenate (CCA) wood preservative in aquatic ecosystems demands that their joint-actions in eliciting toxic effects be assessed for adequate understanding of the health risk they may pose to biota. Clarias gariepinus was exposed to As2O3, CrO3 and CuO and their composite mixtures (1:1 and 1:1:1) at various concentrations (0 -600 mg/L) for 96-h to determine the acute toxicity using OECD (1992) protocol. C. gariepinus was t… Show more

“…The presence of these organic pollutants correlated with the induction of DNA damage and cytotoxicity in OSL-exposed human cell lines. The analyzed metals along with physico-chemical parameters and unanalyzed organic compounds in OSL individually and or interactively induced chromosome aberration and or DNA damage which occurred during mitotic and meiotic stages of spermatogenesis, and invariably resulted in the formation of abnormal sperm morphology [ 34 , 36 , 54 ]. Xenobiotics, including heavy metals, in OSL had similarly being reported to interfere with DNA integrity in spermatogonia nuclei of exposed boar [ 37 ] and peripheral erythrocytes and bone marrow polychromatic cells of fish, Japanese quail and rat [ 6 , 12 ].…”

“…Micronuclei are extra-chromosomal bodies that contain acentric chromatid fragments or chromosomes that were not incorporated ino either of the daughter nuclei after cell division (Ali et al, 2014). Micronucleus (MN) assay is the most widely used technique for the detection of mutagenic effects of individual and mixture of chemical compounds in erythrocytes of Clarias gariepinus exposed both in in vivo and in situ (Alimba et al, 2015(Alimba et al, , 2017(Alimba et al, , 2019Fagbenro et al, 2019).…”
