Experimental Studies and Modeling of the Drying Kinetics of Multicomponent Polymer Films

Abstract: Abstract. The process of drying thin polymer films is an important operation that influences the film structure and solid state, and the stability of the product. The purpose of this work was to study and model the drying kinetics of multicomponent films based on two polymers: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC, amorphous) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA, semicrystalline). The isothermal drying kinetics of the films at different temperatures (40, 60, and 80°C) were studied using thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) an… Show more

“…The processes occurring during annealing and drying can be distinguished into distinct drying stages, with considerations of heat and mass transfer phenomena 77 . After the initiation of the annealing step in phase II, the temperature of the substrate increases linearly over time and by a heat-transfer process, the temperature of the thin film increases.…”

“…The drying step is crucial to improve intramolecular interaction between the amylose and amylopectin chains [31]. Drying equipment, including microwaves, hot-air ovens, trays, and vacuum driers, is used for the casting process for easy evaporation of solvents and peeling of films [32]. Quick-drying methods for the casting process have exhibited negative physical and structural behavior [33].…”

“…As the thickness of wet strip cast, the rheological and physicochemical properties of the cast solution affect the drying speed. [83,84] These limit the scale-up process, which could affect the final thickness of the dried strip. Furthermore, the selection of solvents depends on the solubility of the API, its stability in the solvents and its heat sensitivity during the drying process.…”
