Experimental Study of the Neurotoxic Effects of Photodynamic Therapy on the Spinal Cord

Abstract: Objective To evaluate the effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the dura mater using the photosensitizers aluminum chloride phthalocyanine and methylene blue in in vivo assays. Methods Fifty-six male Wistar rats were divided into two groups; one submitted to PDT and the other submitted to the photosensitizers without their photoactivation (control). The photosensitizers were applied to the dura mater after laminectomy at the T10 level. The methods used for assessment were the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan (… Show more

“…Furthermore, studies on the development of the central nervous system are imperative for understanding the processes of organogenesis and the probable causes of congenital abnormalities (Cagnoto et al, 2009). HE staining can be used to study the normal development of the central nervous system (Costa et al, 2019; Ekici et al, 2014; Lakshmi, Sumitra, & Victor, 2013). Hematoxylin stains the cell nuclei, and eosin stains the extracellular matrix, indicating the nuclear and cellular integrity, respectively.…”

“…A FBM e a PDT são terapias adjuvantes usadas para o tratamento de LP. A FBM é aplicada por meio do laser, que consiste na emissão estimulada de luz, com potência variando de 1 a 500 mW e com comprimento de onda variando de 600 a 1000 nm (5) . A FBM é capaz de realizar a troca de fótons, as partículas de energia da luz, entre a fonte que emite o laser e as organelas, geralmente as mitocôndrias.…”
