Experimental Study on the Mechanical Behavior of EN08 Steel at Different Temperatures and Strain Rates

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to investigate the mechanical response of EN08 steel at quasi-static and dynamic strain rates. Uniaxial tensile tests under quasi-static regime (from 0.0015 s−1 to 0.15 s−1) are conducted on EN08 steel at a range of temperatures between 298 K and 923 K. Dynamic compression tests are also performed by using a drop hammer and by considering different masses and heights to study the material response at strain rates up to 800 s−1. Through the stress-strain responses of EN08 steel, a… Show more

“…Predicted stress-strain curve for linearly decreasing strain-rate (a-. ε-LIN) is similar to measured true stress-true strain profile of drop-weight experiments in Reference [27] (although they are carried out at room temperature and two decades of higher strain rates) on one hand, and similar to industrial hydraulic or screw type presses. Experiment developed for testing of sheet specimens by progressive decrease of strain rates yields more pronounced decrease of force after reaching peak force [28], which is similar to the stress-strain response on the square root law shape of the strain-rate input (b-.…”

“…Experimental investigations of the behaviour of EN08 steel and corrosion-resistant alloy steel (MMFX) reinforcing bars were conducted by Abed et al (2018Abed et al ( , 2020 to study their performance at elevated temperatures. For the EN08 steel, strain increase rate and temperature significantly affected its yield and ultimate strengths.…”

“…Then, an energy-based empirical model was used to predict the damage evolution of the 5083 Aluminum alloy at various strain rates. Abed et al [53] performed a mechanical study on EN08 steel at quasi-static and dynamic strain rates. They quantified the micro defects density by scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and proposed it as an input for the energy-based model to predict the material's damage evolution.…”
