Experten-Evaluation von Web-GIS-Lösungen und Internetkartendiensten zur Kommunikation von Hochwasserinformationen

Abstract: Abstract. Show more

“…Besides traditional paper maps, digital maps, map-based information systems, simulations, and web-technology are increasingly applied in risk communication (Maclachlan et al 2007, Hagemeier-Klose and Wagner 2008, Haubrock et al 2008. Although criticism arises concerning availability and accessibility of information provided via the Internet, recent research work points out that the Web may democratize the access to risk information especially if open-access and open-source technology is used (Curtis and Mills 2008).…”

“…In consequence, recent publications indicate that they often fail to transmit their content (Meyer et al, 2012). Non-experts in the field, in particular, often struggle to interpret the maps correctly (Hagemeier-Klose and Wagner, 2009;Kjellgren, 2013;Perry et al, 2016;Severtson and Vatovec, 2012). This is fundamental, because as stated above, improving resilience requires not only knowledgeable experts but also politicians, authorities, and informed members of society to support precautionary actions.…”

“…Previous studies evaluating maps for risk management purposes mainly focused on directly involved stakeholders and authorities (Dransch et al, 2010). The few studies that analyzed the public's needs regarding hazard maps did so either by questioning experts or by mostly relying on a small sample (Hagemeier-Klose and Wagner, 2009;Kjellgren, 2013;Meyer et al, 2012;Thompson et al, 2015). The understanding of seismic hazard by non-experts in the field and the public has thus been neglected.…”
