Exploration of Aqueous Phyllanthus amarus Leaf Extract as a Protective Agent in Mercury Chloride-Exposed Wistar Rats: A Neurobehavioural Study

Abstract: Mercury (Hg) exposure is known to damage vital components of the central nervous system primarily through oxidative stress. Although Phyllanthus amarus (PA) is reported to be rich in antioxidants, there is a dearth of relevant research evidence to show its protective activity against Mercuric chloride (HgCl2)-induced neurotoxicity. Accordingly, this study was designed to investigate the possible protective activity of aqueous Phyllanthus amarus leaf extract (APALE) in HgCl2-exposed rats using standard neurobeh… Show more

“…Spontaneous alternation, a quick and relatively simple test of memory, measures the willingness of rodents to explore new environments. Rodents typically prefer to investigate a new arm of the maze rather than return to one that was previously visited (Enogieru and Omoruyi, 2022). Many parts of the brain including the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex are involved in this task and prefrontal cortex lesions are reported to impair spontaneous alternation (Bizon et.…”

“…The novel object recognition test was carried out in a piece of open wooden equipment (80 × 60 × 40 cm) as previously reported (Pitsikas et al, 2001;Enogieru and Omoruyi, 2022;Enogieru and Egbon, 2022). Briefly, a two-minute exploration of the apparatus was permitted on the 27 th day of the experiment.…”
