Exploring how inter-organizational relational benefits affect information sharing in supply chains

Abstract: This research explores how inter-organizational relationship interacts with factors affecting the development and implementation of information sharing. On the basis of the resource-based view and relational risk perspective, we developed a model which comprises three research hypotheses with three constructs, including relational benefits, relational risk, and information sharing. The constructs are measured by well-supported measures in the literature. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze survey … Show more

“…There is a growing concern in the industry of the need to enhance knowledge management, and collaboration among stakeholders while countering the negative impacts of uncertainties. Therefore: Enhanced information sharing helps in (i) shared situational awareness, (ii) enhanced threat understanding and (iii) improved decision‐making (Cheng, Chen, & Chen, ). Monitoring satisfaction levels and investments in relationship marketing as well as managing loyalty programs could all help to enhance the level of trust in a supply chain (Konuk, Rahman, & Salo, ). By mitigating uncertainties, stakeholders in a supply chain can reduce extra costs and improve their bottom line (Wu et al, ). …”

“…Another contribution of the study is that it allows a greater understanding of the ESC controversy, linked to network pararadoxes (Hakansson and Ford, ), because ESC provides opportunities but also imposes restrictions. Relational risk may generate a negative impact on knowledge exchanged in inter‐firm relationships and it may produce a ‘dark‐side’ in the long‐term (Cheng et al ., ). Actors in a long‐term relationship are then likely to act opportunistically, may lose objectivity or generate a similar thought.…”

“…In the context of supply chain operations, studies on collaboration risk were carried out by Cheng and Chen (2016), and Cheng et al (2013). They have considered risk factors, such as institutional orientation, moral orientation, opportunistic behaviour, loss of competences, incomprehension, dysfunctional conflict, and no-learning.…”
