Exploring temporal aspects of social identity: the concept of possible social identities

Abstract: In the social identity model of reactions to negative social identity (Tajfel & Turner, 1979, 1986), the concept of cognitive alternatives focuses on individual and group perceptions of the possibility of changing group memberships or improving existing ones. In the current paper, the under‐researched concept of cognitive alternatives is expanded so as to better encompass issues relating to the temporal dimension of social identity maintenance. “…This leads to the question of whether ideal selves as cognitive representations are limited to ideal personal selves or whether they extend also to social selves. In a first approach, Cinnirella (1998) elaborated this question theoretically from the perspective of social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and introduced the notion of possible social identities. He defined possible social identities as individual and shared cognitions about "possible past group memberships, possible future memberships, and perceptions of the possible past and future for current group memberships" (Cinnirella, 1998, p. 227).…”

“…Cinnirella, 1998;Higgins, 1987;. Without a specific test of trait positivity alone accounting for the connection between people's own attributes and their views of others, it would be plausible that possible selves account better for these social judgments simply because of their inherent affective or evaluative components.…”
