Exploring the Bacteriome and Resistome of Humans and Food-Producing Animals in Brazil

Abstract: Humans and food production animals have been reported to be important reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes (ARGs). The frequency of these multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria tends to be higher in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), due mainly to a lack of public health policies.

“…We analyzed 4,824 healthy human adult gut metagenomes and 215 children, listed on Table S7 along with their NCBI accession numbers and relevant metadata. These metagenomic studies comprised isolates from Australia (PRJEB6092), Austria 127 , Bangladesh 128 , Brazil 129 , Canada 130 , China 131,132 , Denmark 133 , England 134 , Ethiopia 76 , Fiji 15 , Finland 135 , Ghana 68 , India 136 , Israel 137 , Italy 77,138 , Japan 79 , Korea 139 , Madagascar 76 , Mongolia 76,140 , Netherlands 141 , Peru 142 , Spain 143 , Sweden 144,145 , Tanzania 68,77 , Thailand 2 and the USA 2,83,142,146,147 . We also analyzed 1,283 gut metagenomes from infant-mother pairs from Italy 138 , Finland 135 , Sweden 144 and the USA 146,148 , listed on Table S1F.…”

“…As part of a Brazilian surveillance study performed by the GUARANI network aiming to detect antimicrobial resistance mechanisms at the human-animal interface [ 15 ], three carbapenem-resistant S. marcescens strains (SMA371, SMA412, SMA433) were selected for this study. These isolates were recovered from stool samples of a bovine and a poultry from property 1, and of a poultry from property 2, both located in the municipality of Castanhal, Pará state, in the Brazilian Amazon region.…”

“…The carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae KP411 strain was recovered during a prospective surveillance study performed by the GUARANI network, which aimed to monitor the frequency of β-lactamases-producing GNB at the human–animal interface. In this study, 107 stool samples were collected from different hosts (32 humans, 30 poultry, 30 cattle, and 15 swine) from five Brazilian regions in 2020 [ 27 ]. The KP411 were isolated from the northern region and was initially retrieved in a Chromagar TM Orientation plate supplemented with 2 µg of meropenem (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, USA).…”
