Exploring the Contributions of Grit and Personality in the Prediction of Self- and Other-Forgiveness

Abstract: Abstract. The current study explored a series of proposed antecedent predictors of forgiveness. Grit, or an individual’s level of persistence toward long-term goals, was investigated along with personality as predictors of self- and other-forgiveness. A sample of 218 college students from the Midwestern United States completed three questionnaires and a demographics sheet. Consistent with theoretical predictions, correlations among grit, self-forgiveness, and the willingness to forgive others were all positive… Show more

“…On the one hand, numerous studies have supported the predictive validity of Grit, particularly in relation to academic outcomes [1,2,11,[28][29][30][31]. In addition, some studies have suggested Grit's incremental predictive validity over Conscientiousness for other domains such as career success, career engagement, and exercise behavior [10,[32][33][34][35]. On the other hand, a substantial number of studies found that Grit did not have any incremental predictive validity over Conscientiousness for a number of achievement outcomes such as GPA [7,12,13,[36][37][38][39].…”

“…Even among the questionnaire-based studies, the patterns of correlations are not necessarily consistent across studies. For example, two recent studies (Oral and Arslan, 2017;Walker, 2017) used the Self subscale of the HFS as the measure of dispositional self-forgiveness and assessed personality factors. In addition to the Big Five factors, Walker (2017) included a measure of grit (Duckworth et al, 2007), whereas Oral and Arslan (2017) included measures of self-compassion (Neff, 2003) and ruminative tendencies for interpersonal offenses (Wade et al, 2008).…”

“…Indeed, the personality of people has a substantial influence on their lives. Several psychological investigations have been carried out to demonstrate the influence of personality on various aspects of human life; for instance decision making [29], innovativeness and satisfaction with life [30], good citizenship and civic duty [31], romantic relationship [32], forgiveness [33], consumers' behaviors [34], job performance [35], antisocial online behaviors [36], suicidality [37], getting a pandemic like COVID-19 [38], and many others. They are fundamentally established to understand and appraise individual personality differences that characterize people, for a variety of purposes during receiving psychotherapy services [39].…”
