Exploring the Potential of Silviculture Agroforestry Regime as a Compatible Management in Southern Gunung Merapi National Park, Java, Indonesia

Abstract: Silviculture Agroforestry Regime (SAR) is a compatible management model between the local community agroforestry with the intensive buffer zone and Gunung Merapi National Park (GMNP) through forest rehabilitation and renewal zonation system. The aims of this study: to assess the prospects of SAR among the stakeholders, i.e. the local community, the government and the researchers, as well as the challenges on its implementation. This study employed the SWOT analysis (i.e. strengths, weaknesses, opportunities an… Show more

“…This scheme can be used as a reference for the more prospective renewal agroforestry with intensive management of enrichment planting based on agroforest farmers' traditional knowledge. Silviculture agroforestry regime is not only maintain the agroforestry stand, but also biodiversity and the pro-poor target (Suryanto et al, 2011b). Local ecological knowledge can contribute to the development of technological innovation (Mulyoutami et al, 2004;Joshi et al, 2005), the biodiveristy and ecosystem conservation and sustainable natural resources exploitation (Berkes et al, 2000).…”

“…The important connectivity in this revitalization scheme is the connectivity between homegarden-dry field as a single unit of management. Efforts to improve the connectivity of owned land with agroforestry scheme is also developed on the southern slope of Mount Merapi National Park (Suryanto et al, 2011a;Suryanto et al, 2011b) through the silviculture agroforestry regime approach. It is done to organize the potential types of trees and crop so it can avoid function overlapping which seems to be perfunctory.…”

“…Characteristics of each phase of agroforestry are the initial and intermediate agroforestry patterns using trees along border and alley cropping. The stand management in the initial agroforestry is only managed with semi-intensive, while for intermediate and advanced agroforestry, both using conventional approaches (Suryanto et al, 2012a). Assumption developed for agroforester farmers is that more trees means bigger production or its economic value.…”

“…In one side, this change can increase productivity; on the other hand this leads to biodiversity decline (Suryanto et al, 2011b). Commercialization of Agroforestry becomes a reality in response to the narrowing land area and climate change factors.…”
