Exploring the relationships between perceived neighborhood boundaries and street network orientation

Abstract: The neighborhood is a core unit of analysis in urban research, planning, and policy‐making. However, perceptual and historical processes oftentimes result in neighborhoods that are not tied to sub‐urban jurisdictions. For instance, historic neighborhoods might lack official spatial definitions, hampering neighborhood‐based tasks in local offices. In this case, urban practitioners can benefit from readily available spatial proxies, such as the local street network. In this study, we conducted an exploratory ana… Show more

“…The prominent orthogonal fabric of Bairro Alto likely contributes to a higher spatial agreement among all participants (Tang and Painho, 2023). Nonetheless, a discernible trend is evident when examining its eastern boundary where stronger disagreement is present among short-term, younger and former residents, possibly due to the disruption of the fabric due to topographic changes (Figure 6).…”

“…Addressing social, economic and political issues at the urban scale requires the use of meaningful units, serving as the foundation for well-informed policies (Pang et al, 2024). Participatory mapping serves as a valuable exploratory approach in depicting how different population groups spatialize vernacular geographies (Montello et al, 2003;Deng, 2016;Tang and Painho, 2023). This paper aims to explore the spatial arrangement of perceived neighborhood boundaries in Lisbon's historic core using methods of perception-based mapping.…”
