Exploring the underlying structure of mental disorders: cross-diagnostic differences and similarities from a network perspective using both a top-down and a bottom-up approach

Abstract: Our combination of (i) comparing network structure of mental states across three diagnostically different groups and (ii) searching for trans-diagnostic network components across all pooled individuals showed that these two approaches yield different, complementary perspectives in the field of psychopathology. The network paradigm therefore may be useful to map transdiagnostic processes.

“…Specifically, we tested a comprehensive, fully adjusted multiple multilevel moderated mediation model in a sample of controls, ARMS individuals, and FEP individuals, allowing us, at the same time, to minimize the potential impact of illness chronicity and other consequences of psychotic disorder. As such, this study advances previous research using network modeling of ESM data, [43][44][45][46] which have not yet investigated indirect effects of stress, negative affect and other psychological mechanisms in the development of PE.…”

“…We investigated in which cases a TV-VAR model should be preferred over a standard VAR model by generating data from both models and evaluating their performances using the mean square error (MSE) and coverage probability of the 95% credibility intervals. The population parameters were based on previous studies (see, for example, Bos, Hoenders, & Jonge, 2012;Wigman et al, 2015).…”

“…Alternative approaches to conceptualize psychiatric disorders, such as the network approach, do address the complexity of psychiatric disorders [100]. In this framework psychopathology is hypothesized to develop dynamically as a complex dynamic system of interacting symptoms [100][101][102][103][104], which may also shed new light on comorbidity [105]. The stronger symptoms trigger each other, the more likely a vicious circle of cooccurring symptoms will emerge [106,107] that could become a psychiatric disorder [103].…”
