Exposure of captive feral pigeons to fonofos‐treated seed in a semifield experiment

Abstract: Abstract-This study aimed to investigate factors affecting risks to birds from toxic seed treatments under typical field use. Feral pigeons (Columba livia) were exposed for 2 d to fonofos-treated wheat seeds by holding them in pens in plots sown at two depths following standard husbandry in winter sowings in English fenland. In the shallow plots, seeds were readily available to pigeons on the soil surface (8.20 seeds/0.25 m 2 ) while in the deep plots little seed was left uncovered (0.20 seeds/0.25 m 2 ). Seru… Show more

“…In the case of birds, this behaviour has been described in corvids and pigeons (e.g. Pascual and Hart, 1997;Kennedy and Connery, 2008;Curtis et al, 2019), thus the consideration of a digging species is necessary when exposure assessment is driven by medium granivorous birds consuming seeds (i.e. in the case that it is demonstrated that there are few seeds remaining on the soil surface).…”

“…Moreover, additional digging after seeds of some species (e.g. Pascual and Hart, 1997; Kennedy and Connery, 2008; Curtis et al., 2019) must be also considered for acute and reproductive risk. Therefore, to consider the maximum searching area to reach the RAD as a refinement, it is first necessary to establish appropriate focal species (Section 6.5.2) considering both those that feed only from the soil surface and those which are known to dig for seeds/granules.…”

“…This probably explains the failure of some existing pen studies (e.g. Pascual and Hart, 1997) to show mortality despite mortalities being documented for the same species in the wild. 91 If the purpose of a pen study is to investigate avoidance, the PPR Panel's recommendations in section 6.2 apply.…”
