Exposure of Inuit in Greenland to Organochlorines Through the Marine Diet

Abstract: High organochlorine concentrations have been found among the Inuit in eastern Canada and in Greenland. The present study was undertaken to assess the exposure to organochlorines in relation to age, sex, and diet in a general population sample of Inuit from Greenland. Survey data and plasma concentrations of 14 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and 16 pesticides, including 5 toxaphene congeners, were recorded in a random population survey of 408 adult indigenous Greenlanders. In a two-stage design, the s… Show more

“…The nationally representative Health 2000 health examination survey (the Health 2000 survey) was conducted in 2001(Heistaro, 2008. A total of 1526 volunteers, aged 45-74 years, and living near the five university hospitals (Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Kuopio, and Oulu) participated in a cardiovascular and diabetes sub-study and of those, 532 men and 641 women had complete dietary, health interview, and basic health examination data for the present work.…”

“…Transport pathways of organochlorine (OC) pesticides to the Arctic (2) and their burdens in indigenous peoples and wildlife are well documented (3)(4)(5)(6)(7). However, histories of LRAT inputs of OC compounds and the less persistent but more toxic current-use pesticides (CUPs) are largely unknown in the Arctic.…”

“…The Inuit population in Greenland is highly exposed to POPs due to a high intake of marine mammals. Concentrations of POPs among Inuit are amongst the highest in the world, and the age pattern indicates that bioaccumulation of PCBs started in the 1950s [12,13].…”
