Exposure to Diisocyanates and Their Corresponding Diamines in Seven Different Workplaces

Abstract: Biological monitoring to assess exposure to diisocyanates in the workplace is becoming increasingly widespread due to its relative ease of use and ability to look at all exposure routes. Currently, biological monitoring measures the corresponding isocyanate-derived diamine in urine, after hydrolysis. Because of this, any exposure to the diamines themselves released during the industrial process could confound the assessment of diisocyanate exposure. This paper reports an initial assessment of the extent of dia… Show more

“…Ideally, a method not involving derivatization is favored in order to simplify sample preparation. Current methods are either not measuring free MDA or are designed to analyze large numbers of samples using costly automation . The majority of methods involve a long hydrolysis step of over 16 h .…”

“…The high reactivity of isocyanates makes them toxic, with acute or chronic effects. MDI is an irritant and an important respiratory sensitizer, which can cause severe respiratory diseases such as occupational asthma, [3][4][5] hypersensitivity pneumonitis or alveolitis. 6 MDI is also a skin 7 and eye irritant.…”
