“…In such animals, treatment with NP induces, other than VTG synthesis, a significant reduction in the gonado-somatic index (Sumpter & Jobling, 1995;Jobling et al, 1996;Korsgaard and Pedersen, 1998;Christensen et al, 1999), alterations in gametogenesis (Gimeno et al, 1998;Christensen et al, 1999;Van Den Belt et al, 2002;Weber et al, 2003), an increase in apoptotic and necrotic testicular cells (Gimeno et al, 1998;Christensen et al, 1999;Weber et al, 2002) and production of ovo-testis (Gray et al, 1999). Histological alterations were also reported in the liver (Folmar et al, 2001;Zaroogian et al, 2001;Rey Vázquez et al, 2009) and kidney (Folmar et al, 2001;Zaroogian et al, 2001;Vaccaro et al, 2005). Furthermore, although the liver is the site responsible for VTG synthesis in other fishes, namely medaka Oryzias latipes (Temminck & Schlegel 1846) and rare minnow Gobiocypris rarus Ye & Fu 1983, NP-induced VTG was also recorded in the testis and kidney (Kobayashi et al, 2005;Zha et al, 2007).…”
