Expression of Activated Transcription Factor Nuclear Factor‐κB in Periodontally Diseased Tissues

Abstract: Activation of NF-kappaB (p50/p65) is significant in periodontally diseased tissues, suggesting the potential of inhibitors of NF-kappaB in managing periodontitis.

“…The nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) has been proven to play a key role in the transcriptional up-regulation of the LPS-inducible IL-6 gene (Guha and Mackman 2001). Recent analysis of the localization of the NF-κB complex demonstrated markedly increased activity beneath periodontal lesions (Ambili et al 2005;Milward et al 2007). Therefore, NF-κB activation seems to be essential for LPS-stimulated osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption (Yip et al 2004).…”

“…ROS generation is a strong inducer of NF-B translocation (25). The activation of NF-B has been linked with a variety of inflammatory diseases, including periodontitis (26). Whether the eugenol-induced activation of NF-B is through ROS generation remains to be elucidated.…”
