Expression of CD117 (c-Kit) on Circulating B Cells in Pediatric Schistosomiasis

Abstract: Few B cells express CD27, the primary marker for memory B cells, in pediatric schistosomiasis, suggesting B cell malfunction. This study further demonstrates unexpected high expression of CD117 on circulating B cells in children highly exposed to Schistosoma mansoni infectious larvae.

“…Interestingly, increased CD193+ B cells were associated with lower plasma IgE levels as well as CD27+ memory and IgE+ B cell percentages. Coupled with the data that shows a positive correlation between CD117, a marker of immature B cells, and CD193 expression, these data suggest that CD193 expression is associated with reduction of protective immunity 13 …”

“…This observation adds to our recent data explaining the inability of children to develop significant immunity during schistosomiasis infection. 13 These findings reported in this work for the first time, to our knowledge, deserve further characterization to shed more light on their functional significance critical for understanding multiple diseases. Worth noting is that percentages of circulating CD193+ B cells were significantly reduced following praziquantel treatment, which is known to increase immune responses, especially anti-schistosome IgE, towards protective levels in susceptible children.…”
