Expression of cytokeratins, adhesion and activation molecules in oral ulcers of Behçet's disease

Abstract: Our data demonstrates changes in cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions that affect cell homeostasis and may participate in the formation of oral ulcers in BD.

“…Furthermore, these compounds down-regulated TNFα and adhesion molecules in Behcet's disease mice and ameliorated the symptoms. TNFα and adhesion molecules have been shown to be up-regulated in Behcet's disease patients (Sayinalp et al, 1996;Kose et al, 2008). In addition, downregulation of TNFα using anti-TNFα antibody (Infliximab) was found to suppress various Behcet's disease symptoms including sight-threatening panuveitis (Sfikakis et al, 2001) and intestinal ulcers (Ju et al, 2007) in patients and mice (Choi et al, 2008).…”

“…2. In BD, the keratinocytes (KERs) of mucocutaneous tissues and endothelial cells (ENDs) 5,21,33,37 are involved during the first contact with the triggering factors and they contribute to the inflammation by releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines. With the help of secreted molecules, KERs and ENDs attract immune cells such as neutrophils, 5,23,35,38,39 monocytes 40,41 and NK cells 16,[42][43][44] to accumulate at the site of insult to induce an inflammatory reaction, as represented by squares 3-6 in Fig.…”

“…In our study, expression of the γδ +T cells in oral ulcers from BD patients were studied. It was found heterogeneous expression of the γδ +T cells throughout the epithelium and in connective tissue around the ulcer base [9]. …”
