Expression of leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) during the window of implantation in copper T380A intrauterine device users

Abstract: Copper IUDs can inhibit expression of LIF and they may cause inhibition of the implantation stage, which is crucial for pregnancy.

“…These data suggest that some of these factors may also be regulating FAAH expression in the uterus. The main controlling factors discovered so far for the control of FAAH expression are progesterone (Maccarrone et al 2003), leptin (Gasperi et al 2005), and leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF; (Deutsch et al 2002)) which are all elevated during this phase of the menstrual cycle , 2009cGuney et al 2007;Ludwig et al 2000). Although relatively little is known about the factors that regulate NAPE-PLD expression, some have speculated that the tight reciprocal regulation between FAAH and NAPE-PLD in the rodent implantation site (Guo et al 2005;Paria et al 1996;2001;Ueda et al 2000Ueda et al , 2005 is suggestive of a similar but inverted regulatory pathway for NAPE-PLD and FAAH expression.…”

“…LIF is a pleiotropic cytokine of IL-6 family that is considered as one of the cytokines essential for the successful completion of human pregnancy 13 , 14 . It was initially identified as a cytokine having the ability to inhibit proliferation of mouse myeloid leukemic cells and induce their differentiation into macrophages 15 .…”

“…In humans, LIF regulates various functions and is produced by several types of cells, such as fibroblasts, osteoblasts, hepatocytes, monocytes, macrophages and T cells (Mathieu et al, 2012;Metcalf, 2003). It plays a critical role in the reproductive process and is considered essential to successful pregnancy in humans (Franasiak et al, 2014;Fritz et al, 2014;Güney et al, 2007;Kimber, 2005). A higher concentration of LIF in the follicular fluid is correlated with embryo quality, which suggests that LIF has an important role in the physiology of ovulation and early embryonic development (Arici et al, 1997).…”
