Extended phraseological information in a valence dictionary for NLP applications

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to propose a far-reaching extension of the phraseological component of a valence dictionary for Polish. The dictionary is the basis of two different parsers of Polish; its format has been designed so as to maximise the readability of the information it contains and its re-applicability. We believe that the extension proposed here follows this approach and, hence, may be an inspiration in the design of valence dictionaries for other languages.

“…It contains syntactic structures of MWE entries to which corpus occurrences are linked. In Walenty (Przepiórkowski et al, 2014), a Polish valency dictionary, the initial set of entries stems from pre-existing singleword e-dictionaries, which were then extended to MWEs and described as exhaustively as possible as to their valency frames. All frames are documented with attested examples, preferably but not necessarily from the National Corpus of Polish.…”

“…Sposób zapisu elementów zleksykalizowanych w schematach też jest wynikiem ewolucji (Przepiórkowski et al 2014a). Początkowo, jako najczęstsze, dopuszczano tylko zleksykalizowane frazy nominalne i przyimkowo-nominalne z prostą sygnalizacją możliwości modyfikacji.…”

“…Tag drugiej połowy druga połowa subst:sg:gen:f Walenty is a Polish large-scale valence dictionary of about 50000, 3700, 3000, and 1000 subcategorization frames (in its 2015 version) for Polish verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs respectively. Its encoding formalism is rather expressive and theory-neutral, and includes an elaborate phraseological component (Przepiórkowski et al, 2014). 1 Thus, above 8,000 verbal frames contain lexicalized arguments of head verbs, i.e., they describe VMWEs.…”
