Externalization in the platform economy: Social platforms and institutions

Abstract: The growing platform economy has revived the debate on the applicability of internalization theory in contemporary contexts. In moving this debate forward, we draw on insights from hybrids research and property rights theory to complement the internalization school. Our core contribution lies in a reconceptualization of platforms as a hybrid organizational form enabling the exchange of property rights between platform owners and complementors. Using social platforms as an example, we propose that improvement i… Show more

“…Reliance on complementors is different from traditional alliances or joint ventures as complementors are not hierarchically integrated partners or employees. Instead, they are independent contributors satisfying country-specific user needs and enhancing platform value in local markets, even without a direct financial relationship with the platform firm (Chen, Li, et al, 2022 ; Li et al, 2019 ; Vahlne & Johanson, 2017 ). We recognize substantial variations in the extent to which multi-sided platforms extensively rely on local complementors to create value (e.g., Just Eat, Airbnb, Uber, Groupon) or combine a mix of local and international complementors (e.g., TikTok, YouTube, App Store, etc.).…”

“…We recognize substantial variations in the extent to which multi-sided platforms extensively rely on local complementors to create value (e.g., Just Eat, Airbnb, Uber, Groupon) or combine a mix of local and international complementors (e.g., TikTok, YouTube, App Store, etc.). Nevertheless, the value generated by these firms continuously evolve due to not only the design and configuration of the digital infrastructure provided by the focal platform firm, but also the contributions of complementors (Chen, Li, et al, 2022 ; Dattée, Alexy, & Autio, 2018 ; Nambisan et al, 2019 ). Such a combination of globally accessible digital infrastructures and network of independent complementors provides digital platform firms an entry mode for exploiting their firm-specific advantages in foreign markets.…”

“…As for theoretical perspectives, new internalization theory can elucidate GVC-based or ecosystembased analysis by engaging with the entire GVC, ecosystem, or digital platform as the unit of analysis (Benito et al, 2019;Chen, Li, Wei, & Yang, 2022). Network analysis, rather than traditional dyadic or multilateral analysis, may offer new insights into the mechanisms that link independent platform actors not directly controlled by the platform MNE (Li et al, 2019).…”

“…How does IPR-related distance and IPR enforcement in practice influence transaction costs, knowledge flows, and, consequently, MNE location choices? How are location strategies affected by IPRs in 'new' technological domains where IPRs are still unclear (Chen, Li, Wei, & Yang, 2022). And how can institutional changes in different countries influence location-specific advantages, and consequently MNE geographic diversification of their subsidiaries?…”
