Extinction of a West African Red Colobus Monkey

Abstract: We provide the first documented case of the extinction in the twentieth century of a widely recognized primate taxon. During surveys in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire in 1993–1999, we were unable to find any surviving populations of Miss Waldron's red colobus monkey (  Procolobus badius waldroni), a primate taxon endemic to the forests of this part of West Africa. We conclude that this monkey, which at least one authority considers worthy of species status, is probably extinct. Hunting by humans appears to be the ult… Show more

“…Most primate species evidence reduced abundance in areas where they are heavily hunted, and hunting has caused local extinctions (Mittermeier, 1986;Struhsaker, 1999;Oates et al, 2000). With few exceptions, primate populations in forests sufficiently degraded by human activity, such as logging, show similar responses (Struhsaker, 1997;Cowlishaw and Dunbar, 2000).…”

“…Many species are seriously overexploited; for example, of 57 hunted vertebrate species in the Congo Basin, 60% are hunted unsustainably [Fa et al, 2002]. In West Africa, acute over-hunting has led to a near-collapse of the commercial bushmeat trade and the extinction of a primate species [Oates et al, 2000].…”

“…Overhunting caused the recent extinction of Miss Waldron's red colobus monkey. Several other primate species are soon to follow [6]. Up to date, it is not known exactly how many species have been eradicated and gone into extirpations due to excessive and uncontrolled hunting.…”
