“…The thermal neutron irradiation facility has a 100 Â 20 Â 40 cm 3 cavity housed in the modified thermal column of the reactor, and this cavity was used to perform BNCT on the explanted livers of patients affected by multiple metastases (Zonta et al 2009). It is characterized by a noncollimated neutron field with a low contamination of epithermal and fast neutrons (1.9 Â 10 8 cm −2 s −1 for neutron energy between 0.4 eV and 1.6 keV; 4.4 Â 10 7 cm −2 s −1 for neutron energy between 1.6 keV and 17.3 MeV) as well as of photons (Bortolussi et al 2007;Protti et al 2012).…”

“…This feature enables the obtention of several tissue sections with the same concentration in order to be measured with the different techniques. Liver was chosen because ex-situ BNCT for hepatic metastases is a current project of the Argentinean BNCT group (Miller et al, 2009), based on the first experience at the University of Pavia (Zonta et al, 2009). Kidney was chosen because it accumulates large amounts of boronophenylalanine (BPA), thus it was possible to analyse two tissues with different boron concentrations from each animal.…”

“…The test was performed in vivo by irradiating the animal inside the thermal column of the TRIGA Mark II reactor in the irradiation facility previously designed for Taormina treatment. [25] The TRIGA maximum power is 250 kW. The irradiation facility has a cross section of 40 20 cm 2 and a length of 1 m and starts at about 1.3 m from the centre of the reactor core.…”
