Extraction and concentration of vapors from fire debris for forensic purposes: Evaluation of the use of Radiello Passive Air Sampler

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe Radiello Passive Air Sampler is one of the latest innovations developed for the sampling of pollutants in the air by passive headspace. It has been reported that its properties allow an enhanced sensitivity, reproducibility and adsorption capacity. It therefore appears to be of interest in the extraction of potential residues of ignitable liquids present in fire debris when arson is suspected.A theoretical approach and several laboratory tests have made it possible to precisely characterize … Show more

“…Indeed, substantial particle plumes could be seen emanating from the plant during deployment and collection. The Radiello Ⓡ diffusive body of the PAS has a reported average pore size of 25 ± 5 m and a wall thickness of 1.7 mm (Baechler et al 2010, Puchalski et al 2011, and hence is not likely to allow the passage of PBM.…”

“…Significant changes continue to occur in the areas of sample preparation and data analysis (49). Several academic research groups have also made significant progress in automated interpretation of GC/MS data and the classification models for comparing questioned samples with reference materials and classes defined by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) (e.g.…”
