Dysmenorrhea is one of the most prevalent disorders in gynecology. Historically, adlay (Coix lachryma-jobi L. var. Ma-yuen Stapf.) has been explored for its anti-tumor, pain relief, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of adlay seeds on the inhibition of uterine contraction and thus dysmenorrhea relief, in vitro and in vivo. HPLC-MS and GC were used to elucidate the ethyl acetate fraction of adlay testa ethanolic extract (ATE-EA) and ethyl acetate fraction of adlay hull ethanolic extract (AHE-EA). Elucidation yielded flavonoids, phytosterols, and fatty acids. Uterine leiomyomas and normal adjacent myometrial tissue were evaluated by oxytocin- and PG-induced uterine contractility. ATE-EA and AHE-EA suppressed uterine contraction induced by prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α), oxytocin, carbachol, and high-KCl solution ex vivo. In addition, the external calcium (Ca2+) influx induced contraction, and increased Ca2+ concentration was inhibited by ATE-EA and AHE-EA on the uterine smooth muscle of rats. Furthermore, ATE-EA and AHE-EA effectively attenuated the contraction of normal human myometrium tissues more than adjacent uterine leiomyoma in response to PGF2α. 3,5,6,7,8,3′,4′-Heptamethoxyflavone and chrysoeriol produced a remarkable inhibition with values of IC50 = 24.91 and 25.59 µM, respectively. The experimental results showed that treatment with ATE-EA at 30 mg/day effectively decreased the writhing frequency both on the oxytocin-induced writhing test and acetic acid writhing test of the ICR mouse.

IntroductionMost women of reproductive age suffered from the primary dysmenorrhea (PD). Up to date, most studies on the etiology of dysmenorrhea focused on endocrine factors while ignored the effect of spino-pelvic bony anatomy on uterus. In this study, we innovatively shed light on the relationship between primary dysmenorrhea and sagittal spino-pelvic alignment.Materials and Methods120 patients diagnosed with primary dysmenorrhea and a control group of 118 healthy volunteers were enrolled into this study. All subjects received the standing full-length posteroanterior plain radiography to evaluate the sagittal spino-pelvic parameters. The visual analog scale (VAS) was used to assess pain rating of primary dysmenorrhea patients. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) or Student's t test was performed to measure statistical significance between differences.ResultsThere was a significant difference in pelvic incidence (PI), sacral slope (SS), lumbar lordosis (LL) and thoracic kyphosis (TK) between PD group and Normal group (P<0.05). Furthermore, in PD group, the PI and SS was significant different between mild pain group and moderate pain group (P<0.05) and there was a significant negative correlation between pain rating and SS. From the perspective of sagittal spinal alignment, the majority of PD patients were classified with Roussouly type 2, meanwhile most normal people were classified with Roussouly type 3.ConclusionSagittal spino-pelvic alignment was related to primary dysmenorrhea symptoms. Lower SS and PI angles may contribute to a worsen pain in PD patients.

O conhecimento popular sobre plantas medicinais, apesar de ser bem disseminado no Brasil, está sendo perdido devido à globalização. Além disso, e apesar de apresentar vantagens, o uso de plantas de maneira errônea pode causar danos à saúde dos usuários. O presente estudo teve como objetivo apontar algumas plantas utilizadas no município e resgatar uma pequena parcela do conhecimento popular, comparando as informações do senso comum com o conhecimento científico sobre essas plantas. O levantamento etnobotânico ocorreu entre maio e junho de 2019, através de entrevistas semiestruturadas com a população do município de Mafra (SC). Após a coleta dos dados, foram realizadas buscas na literatura sobre as espécies mencionadas pelos entrevistados. Dos 22 entrevistados, foi observado a prevalência de entrevistados do sexo feminino (86,36 %). Além disso, a maior parte dos participantes possuem mais de 60 anos de idade (36,36%) e ensino fundamental incompleto (22,72%). A fonte principal do conhecimento popular sobre o uso das plantas foi transmitida pelos seus antepassados. Alguns informantes (18,18%) relataram o aparecimento de efeitos adversos com o uso de algumas espécies. Foram mencionadas 87 plantas distribuídas em 49 famílias, sendo as famílias dominantes Asteraceae (11,5%), Lamiaceae (10,3%). As plantas mais citadas foram: babosa (Aloe sp.), camomila (Chamomilla sp.), capim-limão (Cymbopogon sp.), gervão (Stachytarpheta sp.), hortelã (Mentha sp.) e penicilina (Alternanthera sp.). Com esses resultados, foi possível mapear o uso e levantar dados acerca de algumas plantas medicinais utilizadas pela população de Mafra e concluir que a maioria das espécies do uso popular apresentam a mesma indicação encontrada na literatura científica.
