Eye trigeminal sensitivity, tear film stability and conjunctival epithelium damage in 182 non-allergic, non-smoking Danes

Abstract: The most direct implication is that results can be used as reference level for measurements in problem buildings and for individual measurements. The reference can also be used in research and the other results as basis for future hypotheses and for support of existing hypotheses.

“…This high blink frequency is also compatible with the finding that the mean time of blink suppression is significantly higher for men than for women, while men also appear to be more capable of speeding up their blinking (42). In a recent study of nonallergic Danes, women who reported eye irritation also had higher levels of epithelial damage of the conjunctiva than men when exposed to carbon dioxide (71). It is of note that women apparently produce less foam in the canthus (76).…”

“…A thick lipid layer protects against the development of dry eyes; however, some thinning of the lipid layer occurs during a workday in offices (68,69). The break-up time appears also to decrease with increasing age, starting above 40-60 years of age (35,58,67,70,71), and is thus consistent with an increase in dry eyes with increasing age (64) and reduced tear secretion among elderly people, particularly among women.…”

“…In a study of complaints in 14 oYce buildings across Germany BUT appeared to be the best indicator for self-reported eye symptoms (Brasche et al 2001). Association between perceiving "dry air" and reduced BUT has been found in laboratory studies among healthy, non-smoking and nonallergic adults (Kjaergaard et al 2004). However, whether eye irritation such as dry eyes is associated with the perception of dry air after longer duration of oYce work requires more research (WolkoV et al 2006).…”

“…Kjaergaard et al (36) performed a population study of eye trigeminal sensitivity, tear fi lm stability, and conjunctival epithelium damage in a random sample of 182 non-allergic, non-smoking citizens of the Aarhus County, Denmark. They analysed the distribution of eye sensitivity to CO 2 -induced irritation (COI), tear fi lm stability (BUT), and epithelium damage (ED), and the relation of these parameters with age and sex.…”
