Asphalt exhibits self-healing ability, though at a lower rate. In this study, urea formaldehyde-epoxy resin (UFE) microcapsules were prepared using polyurea formaldehyde as the wall and epoxy resin as the core material, which were in turn applied to fabricate UFE-styrene butadiene styrene modified asphalt (abbreviated as UBS asphalt). Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed well-coated microcapsules have globular geometry with obvious folds in the wall. Ductility test showed 90% higher healing rate of UBS asphalt than pure styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) modified asphalt. Dynamic shear rheometer and multi-stress creep recovery tests indicated that UFE microcapsule incorporation can improve the viscoelasticity, high temperature stability, and permanent deformation resistance of pure SBS modified asphalt attributed to the even distribution of UFE microcapsules in asphalt and their better mutual compatibility, which was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy. At 100 and 3200 Pa, the recovery rate of 0.4% UBS asphalt was 32.1% and 71.7% higher than that of the original SBS modified asphalt, respectively. UFE microcapsule and asphalt only physically interacted as confirmed by Fourier infrared spectroscopy analysis. This study provides a feasible alternative approach for the preparation of UBS asphalt with enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability for applications in construction and highway industries.

The construction of suitable roads in rainy areas has created problems in the construction process due to the low resistance of asphalt to moisture. To solve this problem, materials are commonly used that make mixtures resistant to moisture; however, these materials may reduce the dynamic resistance of asphalt. Therefore, materials should be used that, in addition to increasing the dynamic resistance, also increase the moisture resistance of asphalt mixtures. One of these materials used in this research is steel wool fiber (SWF), which in addition to creating conductive roads also could have a significant effect on moisture resistance. In this study, the impact of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% SWF on the Marshall stability and moisture sensitivity of mixtures was investigated using the Marshall stability and indirect tensile strength (ITS) tests, respectively. Moreover, using SWF as a conductive fiber, the conductivity properties of asphalt mixtures were explored to find the optimal amount of electrical conductivity. The results of the Marshall stability test indicated that by increasing SWF contents, the stability of mixtures increased, compared with the base sample, and greater amounts of 6% SWF resulted in the reduction of the Marshall stability. The results of ITS showed that modification of bitumen by SWF increased ITS and tensile strength ratio (TSR) amounts of mixtures. 6% SWF was the optimal amount for enhancing the resistance of asphalt mixtures to moisture sensitivity. The results of the electrical resistivity test showed that the resistivity had three phases: high resistivity, transit, and low resistivity. Mixtures containing less than 4% SWF illustrated an insulating behavior, with electrical resistivity greater than 7.62 × 108 Ω . m . At the transit phase, the resistivity of mixtures had a sharp reduction from 7.62 × 108 Ω . m to 6.17 × 104 Ω . m . Finally, 8% SWF was known as the optimal content for the electrical conductivity of mixtures.

This study reports the effect of polydopamine bionic coating and γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH570) composite modified polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber as a secondary modifier on the performance of styrenebutadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt. Dynamic shear rheometer test indicated the complex shear modulu, storage modulus, and loss modulus of modified PAN (KD-PAN) incorporated SBS modified asphalt was increased by 12.4, 20.5, and 11.2%, respectively compared with PAN/SBS modified asphalt. The master curve of G * of fiber/SBS composite modified asphalt shows that the deformation resistance of KD-PAN/SBS modified asphalt is greater than that of PAN/SBS modified asphalt in the entire loading frequency range. The cone penetration test showed significantly enhanced shear strength of KD-PAN/SBS modified asphalt. The adhesion work test results and SEM images of interface between fiber and SBS modified asphalt revealed that the adhesion effect of KD-PAN and SBS modified asphalt is better than that of PAN and SBS modified asphalt.
