Fabrication and Characterization of SiC-Coated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Reinforced Reaction Bonded SiC Composite

Abstract: SiC-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SiC-coated MWNTs) made by RF magnetron sputtering were introduced into the SiC suspensions to enhance the mechanical behaviors of reaction bonded silicon carbide ceramics. The composites were prepared by the epoxy resin curing and liquid silicon infiltration at 1550°Cfor 60min. The distribution, morphology, and reinforcing behaviors of MWNTs were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals that the MWNTs were reserved during the reaction sintering. The flexural stren… Show more

“…Chang et al [92] and Siegel et al [92] reported an improvement of 24 % of the indentation fracture toughness compared with a value of 4.2 MPa•m 1/2 of the monolithic alumina. However, Wei et al [94] showed that by adding as little as 3 vol % CNTs to alumina matrix the indentation fracture toughness increases by 79 % and the bending strength increases by 13 %.…”

“…The electrical percolation threshold in ceramic-CNT composites was reported to be very low due to the excellent electrical properties of CNTs. The addition of only 0.3 vol % CNTs to SiC matrix results in 75 % reduction of electrical resistivity [94]. Ahmed et al [95] reported a high electrical conductivity with a percolation threshold close to 0.79 vol % attributed to the high aspect ratio of MWCNTs.…”
