Fabrication and electrical characteristics of flash-sintered SiO2-doped ZnO-Bi2O3-MnO2 varistors

Abstract: The dense ZnO-Bi 2 O 3-MnO 2-xSiO 2 (ZBMS) varistors for x = 0, 1, 2, 3 wt% were fabricated by flash sintering method under the low temperature of 850 ℃ within 2 min. The sample temperature was estimated by a black body radiation model in the flash sintering process. The crystalline phase assemblage, density, microstructure, and electrical characteristics of the flash-sintered ZBMS varistors with different SiO 2-doped content were investigated. According to the XRD analysis, many secondary phases were detected… Show more

“…The decrease of grain size is attributed to the doping with SLS glass which contains high SiO 2 , which Zn 2 SiO 4 phase acted as a nail at the grain boundary. Thus, hindering grain movement and inhibiting grain growth [32]. The Co element diffuses from grain boundary to grain simultaneously as shown in Fig.…”

“…In this process, ceramics can be densified more rapidly (usually in < 5 min) at furnace temperatures several hundred degrees lower than that utilized during traditional sintering. Various materials such as ionic conductors, semiconductors, and insulators have been successfully prepared by flash sintering or other FASTs 2 J Adv Ceram 2022, 11(3): 0-0 www.springer.com/journal/40145 [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…With the development of current-or electric field-assisted sintering techniques, such as spark plasma sintering (SPS) and micro-wave sintering (MWS), it becomes possible to obtain ceramic materials at a faster speed and lower energy consumption [1][2][3]. Since being first reported by Raj et al [4] in 2010, flash sintering (FS) has been broadly applied to sinter many kinds of ceramics, including YSZ [5][6][7], Al 2 O 3 [8,9], BaTiO 3 [10,11], SiC [12], and ZnO [13,14]. According to these studies, FS makes it possible to sinter highly densified ceramics in a short time at low temperatures.…”
