Fabrication and Properties of Biobased Layer-by-Layer Coated Ramie Fabric-Reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Resin Composites

Abstract: Ramie fabrics were modified with biobased electrolytes, i.e. cationic chitosan and anionic phytic acid, and the flame retardant cationic electrolyte melamine by a layer-bylayer (LbL) assembly method. Then, the LbL-modified fabric-reinforced unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) composites were fabricated by a hand lay-up method. The onset thermal degradation temperature of the LbL-modified fabric-reinforced UPR composites was lower than that of the raw fabric-reinforced UPR sample, while char residues of the compo… Show more

“…Egg white protein contained amino acids, so that CT W spectra showed two new peaks at 1630 cm -1 and 1525 cm -1 indicating amide-I and amide-II (Bosco et al 2013). In case of CT HA , a new peak appeared at 980 cm -1 for P=O due to the presence of phosphorous content in hypophosphorous acid (Yu et al 2017). According to CT W and CT HA spectra, in combined spectra of egg protein and HA (CT W+HA ) the three peaks found at 1630 cm -1 , 1525 cm -1 and 980 cm -1 would be amide-I, amide-II and P=O.…”

“…Bamboo is a natural polymer material and a rich natural resource in the Asia-Pacific region (Sharma et al, 2015a). As it has the advantages of fast growth, high yield, and excellent mechanical properties, bamboo has been widely used in the production of bamboo-based composites, for example, laminated bamboo board, bamboo plywood, bamboo particleboard, and bamboo scrimber (Verma and Chariar, 2012;Yu et al, 2017a;Zhang et al, 2019). In addition, due to its characteristic appearance, bamboo has been used as a decorative material for buildings (Hu et al, 2012).…”

“…Hu et al constructed Chitosan/Melamine/Phytic acid coating on the surface of ramie fabric by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method to achieve flame retardancy of the LbL-modified fabric reinforced unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). 4 Song et al realized the vertical growth of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) on the surface of ramie fabric through a facile hydrothermal reaction to reach the aim of improving flame retardant property and mechanical property of UPR composites. 5 Carosio et al coupled LbL with UV-curing processes to construct aliphatic acrylic polyurethane latex/ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/chitosan 3 bilayers coating on the surface of cotton fabrics to achieve cotton selfextinguishment, and further constructed Octa-ammonium POSS/ sodium montmorillonite clay coatings on polyester fabrics by LbL assembly to suppress melt dripping phenomenon and improve washing durability.…”
