Fabrication of Large-area Free-standing Ultrathin Polymer Films

Abstract: This procedure describes a method for the fabrication of large-area and ultrathin free-standing polymer films. Typically, ultrathin films are prepared using either sacrificial layers, which may damage the film or affect its mechanical properties, or they are made on freshly cleaved mica, a substrate that is difficult to scale. Further, the size of ultrathin film is typically limited to a few square millimeters. In this method, we modify a surface with a polyelectrolyte that alters the strength of adhesion betw… Show more

“…Utilization of noncovalent monolayers to control 2D material surface chemistry in scalable industrial processes such as solution- and spray-coating elevates the importance of robustness toward a range of solvents. ,, In most classes of monolayers, molecular desorption occurs orders of magnitude more rapidly at defects, suggesting the importance of long-range order. Long-range molecular alignment in the monolayer also has the potential to improve function, similar to performance gains achieved in other classes of film structures through long-range structural control. …”

“…In addition, two of the membrane-bound CAs have been shown to be important for tumorigenesis [ 3 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 ]. CAs have also gained industrial interest as biocatalysts for carbon sequestration of fuel-gas and CO 2 gas exchange in artificial lungs [ 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 ]. All of these applications are possible because of the favorable properties of CAs such as “fast” enzyme kinetics, easy expression, high solubility, and intermediate heat resistance [ 4 , 48 ].…”

“…Freestanding polyvinyl formal films with a thickness of 10–100 nm were made by a spin coating method, as described in detail elsewhere [16, 17] . In brief, a solution of 0.25 wt% Vinylec E (SPI Supplies, West Chester, PA) in ethyl lactate (98%, Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO) was spin coated onto Si wafers pretreated with polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride PDAC (Sigma-Aldrich St. Louis, MO.…”
