Fabrication of superoleophobic cotton fabric for multi-purpose applications

Abstract: Superoleophobicity is of interest for practical applications such as liquid repellency, self-cleaning, stain resistance, anti-bacterial properties and oil–water separation. In this work, the superoleophobic coating on cotton fabric was applied by simple immersion in TiO 2 nanoparticles, perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane and tertraethylorthosilicate solution. Its anti-wetting properties, surface morphology and functionality were characterized. The co… Show more

“…The mechanical durability of the superhydrophobic coating was inspected by water jet, adhesive tape, and sandpaper abrasion test. [ 9,27 ] The water jet produced by syringe and impacted on both uncoated and coated glass substrate. The water jet spreads over on glass substrate due to its hydrophilic nature.…”

“…Treatment of the cotton fabric surfaces is challenging due to the inherent heterogeneous roughness with low thermal stability. Several methods such as dip coating [31,32], solution immersion coating [19,33,34], sol-gel based coating [35], wet chemical process [36] and spray coating [37] have been used to make cotton fabric superhydrophobic. Physical and chemical durability has been a concern.…”

“…Their coating repelled oils with surface tension as low as 47.70 mN m −1 (ethylene glycol). Tudu et al [34] fabricated superhydrophobic cotton fabric by simple immersion in perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTS) solution. Their coating repelled oils with surface tension as low as 27.05 (hexadecane).…”
