Fabrication of Tapered Tip Fibers With a Controllable Cone Angle Using Dynamical Etching

Abstract: Recently, optical fiber tips have been used in many scientific applications requiring a special tip with predetermined cone angle. In this study, we have developed a new type of dynamic chemical etching for fabricating fiber tips which enables us to fabricate tips with predetermined cone angles. The fiber tips are fabricated by injecting or withdrawing hydrofluoric acid to the container in which the fiber is vertically inserted. By changing the flow rate of the acid injection or withdrawal, the height of fiber… Show more

“…In experiment, the dynamic chemical etching method has been used for fabricating dielectric fiber tip with predetermined cone angles. [ 42 ] The diameter, length, and cone angle of the fiber tip can be controlled by changing the flow rate of the acid injection or withdrawal. As far as we know, the glancing angle deposition is used to coat different nanoscale metal films on the surface.…”

“…The ONFT has been fabricated using HF acid and protective silicone oil. 23,24 A syringe pump regulated the meniscus height on the etchant's surface, resulting in the desired cone angle. Dynamic selective etching was used to demonstrate a parabolic shape optical nanofiber probe, and the fiber tip showed an improved transmission.…”

“…Although extrinsic interaction of the light with the surrounding media is possible, the use of the evanescent portion of the guided wave offers some advantages. Exposure of the optical wave to the surrounding media in specific sections of the optical fibers is usually done by two alternatives [1][2][3][4][5]: removing the cladding material, or upon tapering a section of the optical fiber. The latter is the preferred approach to expose the evanescent wave since it involves a simple and reproducible process yielding low-loss devices.…”
