Face dog clutch engagement at low mismatch speed

Abstract: Face dog clutches regain popularity in heavy duty AMT's. Though the reduction of the speed difference between the dogs is the key to a smooth gear shift, the excellent engaging capability is experienced to degrade at low mismatch speed and the outcome of the engagement process becomes uncertain. Using a simple mechanical model, that uncertainty is described and the probability of the successful engagement is given as a function of the initial mismatch speed. Results are validated through statistical evaluation… Show more

“…Aiming at optimizing the shifting control of an automatic mechanical transmission (AMT) used in vehicles, Yang et al proposed a method of optimal shifting control based on pattern recognition and a learning algorithm [4]. Bóka et al use a simple mechanical model to define the reduction of the speed difference between the synchronizers in order to obtain a smooth gear shifting [5]. Qi et al analyze the principle of gear shifting in a hydraulic system and obtain an expert PID control to reduce the shifting vibration and time [6].…”

“…Thus the variable-idle speed control scheme is proposed for compromising the driving comfort and the improvement of torque capacity. But, the main cause of uncomfortable jerk is the rapid clutch engagement at a high relative angular velocity between the driving and driven sides for satisfying the requirement of the load torque [21]. Therefore, the rotational speed to be engaged to the driven side should be necessarily limited to a certain range.…”

“…Bóka [16] described an external synchronization strategy for a dog clutch in automatized mechanical transmission (AMT) for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Later, Bóka [18] developed more the strategy. He used a dynamic modeling approach for system modeling and used the notion of engagement probability to find a certain successful gearshift region.…”
