Facet Joint Degeneration in Patients With Lumbar Disc Herniation and Probable Determining Factors

Abstract: Objective To evaluate facet joint degeneration following surgical treatment in patients with lumbar disc herniation, seeking to correlate it with possible determining factors. Methods Cross-sectional observational study, which analyzed medical records, radiographs and magnetic resonance images of 287 patients with lumbar disc herniation treated surgically at the Spine Surgery Service of the Hospital Ortopédico de Passo Fundo. Information about age and sex was collected. In the imaging exams, the following v… Show more

“…One important finding in this literature review was the identification of a case series where the authors advocate for the application of injections in multiple sites rather than targeting a single area (as shown in Table 5 ). It is well established that there is a strong relationship between disc degenerative disease and facet arthrosis [ 119 ]. Furthermore, it is common to observe simultaneous degenerative lesions in real-world patients.…”

“…1 In turn, intervertebral disc disease is considered one of the leading causes of pain with a high worldwide prevalence, especially among adults, and its etiology is multifactorial. 2,3 The risk factors for disc disease are age, gender, body mass index (BMI), smoking, diabetes, type of hernia, and level of involvement. 4 The presentation of symptoms is variable depending on the patient and usually includes a combination of generalized pain and weakness in the spine.…”

“…Obesity, family history, discarthrosis, trauma, among others are risk factors for degenerative changes of the discs and posterior elements, favoring spinal canal stenosis. [1][2][3][4][5][6] A triarticular complex is found in each spinal segment, formed by the intervertebral disc and the facet joints, constituting a control mechanism for the axial, coronal, and sagittal movements of the lumbar spine. Asymmetry between the angles of the facet joints (right and left) is defined as facet tropism.…”
