Facets : A Cloudcompare Plugin to Extract Geological Planes From Unstructured 3d Point Clouds

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Geological planar facets (stratification, fault, joint…) are key features to unravel the tectonic history of rock outcrop or appreciate the stability of a hazardous rock cliff. Measuring their spatial attitude (dip and strike) is generally performed by hand with a compass/clinometer, which is time consuming, requires some degree of censoring (i.e. refusing to measure some features judged unimportant at the time), is not always possible for fractures higher up on the outcrop and is somewhat hazardous. … Show more

“…Planes that appear in geological outcrops provide useful information to the practitioner, for example, the sedimentation formation, structural or tectonic history and rock mass quality. Recently, Dewez et al (2016) developed a dedicated structural geology plugin called FACET within CloudCompare which is an open source software. It is mainly to accomplish planar facet extraction in order to compute their dip and dip direction.…”

“…Dense point cloud from the photogrammetry process is then imported into a freeware called CloudCompare. FACET is a plugin introduced by Dewez et al (2016) to perform geological plane extraction, the facets can be exported in the format Comma-Seperated-Variable (CSV) ASCII file and shape files for kinematic analysis in other software. In this study, Dips Version 7.0 software from Rocscience was used to perform the kinematic analysis.…”

“…The widening use of SfMphotogrammetry is driving parallel advances in analysis tools for 3-D point clouds (e.g. CloudCompare software www.cloudcompare.org, with plugins such as Facets [Dewez et al 2016] and Compass [Thiele et al 2017a] relevant to structural and morphological analyses).…”
