Facial Hyperpigmentation in Skin of Color: Special Considerations and Treatment

Abstract: Differences in cutaneous diseases in people of color call for nuanced evaluation and management. One of the most common dermatological complaints from patients with skin of color is dyspigmentation, particularly hyperpigmentation. The challenge for clinicians is to establish correct diagnoses along with consistently successful treatments to meet the needs of the increasingly diverse population served. This review focuses on facial hyperpigmentation and outlines the most common skin disorders and treatment opti… Show more

“…Melanin produced by melanocytes gets stored in melanosomes, after which it is deposited in epidermis as the determinant of skin color. Despite the protective effect against sun exposure, abnormal melanin accumulation leads to several disorders related to hyperpigmentation, including melasma, freckle, age spot, and lentigo [ 133 ]. Tyrosinase is a principal enzyme involved in melanogenesis ( Fig.…”

“…The psychosocial aspect of hyperpigmentation has important implications for optimal management of patients. Special considerations when evaluating individuals with skin of color with facial hyperpigmentation can improve both cutaneous disease and QoL [ 24 ]. Given that disorders of hyperpigmentation are highly prevalent and affect a large portion of the patient population in dermatology, it is essential that dermatologists recognize the treatment gaps that exist in patients with skin of color as well as the importance of individualized treatment.…”

“…Management of melasma in darker skin populations is particularly challenging because they are more prone to pigmentary alteration. 25 In India, 20-30% of 40-65 years old women present a facial melasma and current treatments remain unsatisfactory. 26 The present study was conducted in a single centre on a relative limited number of patients.…”
