Facile Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Cross-Linked Nanocellulose Aerogels for Oil–Water Separation

Abstract: A facile and environmental-friendly approach was developed for the preparation of the cross-linked nanocellulose aerogel through the freeze-drying process and subsequent esterification. The as-prepared aerogel had a three-dimensional cellular microstructure with ultra-low density of 6.05 mg·cm−3 and high porosity (99.61%). After modifying by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HTMS), the nanocellulose aerogel displayed stable super-hydrophobicity and super-oleophilicity with water c… Show more

“…This method can obtain cellulose fibers with higher hydrophobicity in simple and gentle process. Shang et al [ 14 ] prepared super-hydrophobicity/super-oleophilicity with good adsorption capacity through the freeze-drying process and subsequent esterification. The reaction process of it was facile and environmental-friendly approach.…”

“…-The integration of inorganic nanoparticles with cellulose brings several advantages such as preventing agglomeration and aggregation ensuring high colloidal stability (Shang et al, 2021). The use of inorganic nanoparticles such as magnetic nanoparticles offers simple separation of the materials after water purification via an external magnet.…”

“…However, it can be modified to be super-hydrophobic. It was modified with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HTMS) via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for the separation of oils (Shang et al, 2021). The materials were fabricated into aerogel with a water contact angle of 151 °.…”

“…Bone marrow and the spleen are recently reported to be the two main origins of hematogenous macrophages ( Ren and Young 2013 ; Swirski et al, 2014 ). Bone marrow-derived monocytes are defined as three subtypes in humans, which includes classical CD14 ++ CD16 − CCR2 + , intermediate CD14 ++ CD16 + CCR2 + , and nonclassical CD14 + CD16 ++ CCR2 − monocytes ( Urbanski et al, 2017 ; Shang et al, 2021 ). The transformation of monocytes into macrophages and migration to tissues depends on inflammatory circumstance ( Figure 1 ).…”
