Facile synthesis of fluorinated poly(arylene ether nitrile) and its dielectric properties

Abstract: A new class of specialty polymer, fluorinated poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PAEN-F), was synthesized via the aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction. Due to its rigid structure, PAEN-F exhibited enhanced heat resistance and thermal stability. Consequently, the glass-transition temperature and initial degradation temperature of PAEN-F reached as high as 179 C and 554 C, respectively. PAEN-F also showed excellent solubility in low-boiling solvents owing to fluorine groups and the nonplanar structure in the re… Show more

“…For example, significant enhancement in the dielectric constants and relatively low dielectric losses were obtained when F, -CN, and R−S(=O) 2 −R´ groups were attached to polymers as side-chain dipoles. For example, fluorinated and cyanated poly(arylene ether nitrile) compounds, a new class of dipolar glass polymers, were obtained by an aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction using tetramethylene sulfone (TMS) and potassium carbonate [ 9 ] ( Figure 3 ).…”

“…Poly(arylene ether nitrile)‐phenyl (PEN‐Ph) as a kind of high‐performance engineering plastics is usually a linear polymer, and it is widely used in the commercial and academic fields due to its excellent performance such as outstanding chemical properties (radiation resistance, low flammability, and toxic gas emission), high thermal stability, superior mechanical properties as well as good molding workability . The PEN with different dihydric phenol structure (Figure ) possesses different properties.…”
